Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Where and under what conditions are ECO Brotbox products produced?

We at ECO Brotbox attach great importance to the origin of our products. Our lunch boxes are produced in a family business in South India. The local production conditions were personally inspected by founder Mustafa. The employed workers receive a fair wage that is above the minimum wage set by the authorities and, of course, no children are employed in the production facilities. These conditions have been officially certified by the manufacturer. The occupational safety management is ISO-certified.

The stainless steel used is sourced exclusively from India’s state-owned stainless steel producer SAIL (Steel Authority of India). Strict production guidelines apply there, so that we can guarantee a consistently high quality for our products.

Our drinking and vacuum bottles as well as our insulated food containers are produced responsibly in China. Here, too, we have attached particular importance to working with a company that produces under fair conditions and according to European standards. Just like our production partner in India, we also work closely with our Chinese production facility. Here, too, Mustafa was convinced by a personal visit that they adhered to our values.

What materials are the products made of?

For our lunch boxes only the highest quality stainless steel type AISI 204cu, a chrome-nickel alloy with approx. 16.5% chrome content and approx. 2% nickel content, is used. AISI is the American Iron and Steel Institute. Due to the low nickel content, our products are also harmless for many nickel allergy sufferers. Of course, it does not contain lead, cadmium or other harmful substances. Food packed in our bread and lunch boxes does not come into contact with any chemicals or harmful substances.

The German GALAB Laboratories have certified the material to be absolutely food safe. Our products are acid-resistant and show no odour or taste deviations. In addition, the stainless steel used is rust-proof and therefore suitable for cleaning in the dishwasher. Stainless steels with at least 10.5% chromium content are considered stainless, the steel we use contains approx. 16.5% chromium.

Our bottles and insulated containers are made of DIN 18/8 stainless steel. They are also food safe and stainless.

Why are the boxes not made of the well-known 18/8 stainless steel? Is there a difference in quality?
The quality of the stainless steel type 204cu is also very high. As you can imagine, there is not only one system for designating stainless steel types. In Germany the DIN system (e.g. the well-known type 18/8) is usually used. In the USA and many other countries the AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) used by our Indian producer. In addition, there are many different types of stainless steel that are suitable for a wide variety of purposes. AISI204cu is just like 18/8 very well suited for use with food. The material is tested acid-resistant, i.e. there are no odour or taste deviations when used with acidic foods (e.g. apples). The german test report can be viewed here. In addition, AISI204cu is stainless and corrosion-resistant (chrome content of approx. 16.5%), making it easy to clean in the dishwasher. Due to the low nickel content of only approx. 2%, our boxes are also suitable for many nickel allergy sufferers.

Questions about use

Are ECO Brotbox products durable?
The high-quality stainless steel makes our products very stable and durable. Nevertheless, they can scratch or also buckle under very strong influence. However, these optical defects have no influence on the functionality.
Are the ECO bread boxes leak-proof?
Our boxes are based on the originals from India, which have been in use there for generations without seals. That’s why we deliberately do without a plastic sealing ring for most boxes. Although this is not a problem when transported upright, we cannot guarantee 100% leakproofness for the standard versions.

In order to fulfil the wish for a leak-proof box, we also have leak proof boxes with sealing rings in our range  – the Tiffin Swing, Tiffin Pro, BO & LI.

Can I transport both cold and hot food and drinks?

Both cold and hot food and drinks can be transported in the boxes and bottles of ECO Brotbox. However, since our standard products are only single-walled stainless steel, these products have no insulating function.

If you want to keep your drinks cold or hot for longer, we recommend our insulated products made of double-walled stainless steel.

Note: The temperature changes of the individual products were measured under room temperature conditions

The leak-proof, non-insulating Tiffin Swing should not be filled with boiling hot food, as this creates a vacuum which makes it difficult to open the box again. Please allow the food to cool briefly before filling.

Are the bottles suitable for carbonated beverages?
No, the filling of carbonated beverages can cause the liquid to leak.
How can I clean the products? Are they dishwasher safe?
Our products are dishwasher safe. During the rinsing process, some water may accumulate in the lid of the bottles, but you can easily remove it by shaking it lightly. We also recommend cleaning the bottles regularly with a bottle brush for more thorough cleaning.

For a manual rinse we recommend warm water and some mild detergent. Our bottles have a wide opening and can be thoroughly cleaned with standard bottle brushes. At regular intervals, depending on the contents, the sealing ring of the bottle caps should be removed, cleaned and replaced (see video: Removing and inserting the sealing ring). The sealing ring is made of food-safe silicone. However, it can change colour after some time (e.g. black tea or similar drinks). This is normal and has no effect on the functionality of the sealing ring. To remove discolouration from the bottle and the sealing ring, place the sealing ring in the bottle, fill in a little vinegar and hot water, allow to take effect and then clean with the bottle brush and rinse thoroughly.

Replacement silicone rings are available in our online shop.

My product has rust stains. Could that be possible?
Since the stainless steel used is non-rusting, it is superficial rust film called flash rust. Flash rust is transmitted from other rusting sources. These can be, for example, non-stainless screws from pots or crockery baskets whose plastic coating has been damaged. The rust that has developed is then spread through the rinsing water in the machine and clings to other stainless steel elements. Superficial rust stains can be easily removed with lemon juice. Allow the juice to act briefly, then wipe off with a dry cloth. To avoid rusting through, surface rust should be removed as quickly as possible.

Can the silicone rings be washed in the dishwasher?
Silicone rings can be washed in the dishwasher. However, we recommend manual rinsing for a long service life.
Some water has collected in the lid of my bottle after cleaning. What can I do?
There’s nothing to worry about! You can easily remove the water by shaking it slightly.
Can ECO Brotbox products be placed in the microwave, oven or freezer?
Stainless steel products must not be used in the microwave. Use in the oven with extreme caution, as the material becomes extremely hot and there is a risk of burning.

Basically, the containers can be used for freezing. Frequent freezing can, however, cause material fatigue. This shortens the lifetime of the boxes. It is also important not to fill the frozen food too high so that the frozen food can spread without stretching the container. The frozen food can cause a very high pressure and deform the box.

My box is too heavy or too easy to open. What can I do?
The locking clamps of our boxes are manually adjusted during production. This means that the strength of the clamps can vary from box to box. We check the strength of the clamps before shipping, but if a clamp is too tight or too loose, it can be easily adjusted to your own requirements by bending it slightly.

Here you can find our video tutorials on the topic:

– Setting the standard clamps (Dabba Magic, Bread Box XL, Bread Box XL double, Cube Box, Cube Box XL, Tiffin Double and Tiffin Triple):

– Adjusting the clamps with clip lock (Tiffin Swing, Tiffin Bowl and Tiffin Double XL):

I can't open my Tiffin Swing anymore. What can I do?
The use of sealing rings makes your Tiffin Swing leak-proof on two levels. However, very hot food can create negative pressure, which makes opening the box considerably more difficult.

So please let the food cool down a little before closing your box. For very hot food (over 70 degrees) it is recommended to remove the sealing rings – but now the box is no longer tight.

If you have problems opening the box, you can find a video on the topic here.
